The Atlanta Braves have outrighted 2B Ruben Gotay, C Corky Miller and rhp Vladimir Nunez for assignment making them all free agents. 25-year old switch hitting Ruben Gotay didn’t do much for the Braves last season as he was mostly used as a pinch hitter. He played in 88 games for the Braves in 2008 and he was 24 for 102 (.235 avg, .665 OPS) with 10 runs scored, 2 homers and 8 RBIs. Gotay should be able to hook up with a new team for 2009 as he has had a semi decent major league career to this point. He has played in 316 games in his major league career and he is 185 for 726 (.255 avg, .686 OPS) with 84 runs scored, 12 homers and 77 RBIs. 32-year old righty swinging catcher Corky Miller was downright awful last season for the Braves and that should have come as no surprise as he’s never been anything close to a legit major league player in his career to date. Miller played in 31 games for the Braves last season and he was 5 for 60 (.083 avg, .285 OPS) with 4 runs scored, 1 homer and 5 RBIs. Miller has now played in 132 games in his major league career and he is 59 for 335 (.176 avg, .554 OPS) with 27 runs scored, 8 homers and 35 RBIs. This could be the end of the line for Miller’s major league career. 33-year old righty reliever Vladimir Nunez made it to the major leagues for the first time since 2004 with the Colorado Rockies. He pitched in 23 games (0 starts) for the Braves last season and he was 1-2 with a 3.86 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. Nunez has now pitched in 252 games (27 starts) in his major league career and he is 21-34 with 21 saves, a 4.76 ERA and a 1.42 WHIP. Nunez will likely get a spring training invite from some team in 2009. The Braves likely won’t miss any of these three guys in the future.
